              Active fluids and their bioengineeringapplications

              报告人:ProfessorChenhui Peng

Activefluids that are self-sustainable fluids with out-of-equilibrium spatiotemporaldynamics driven by internal and external energies is a fascinating researcharea of intensive studies. Active fluids can be formed by systems of bothbiological and artificial origin, such as microtubules driven by molecularmotors, bacterial dispersions, birds, fish, and colloidal particles powered byinternal or external sources of energy. In this talk, I will cover the topicsfor fundamental studies of active fluids in isotropic and anisotropic mediumand their bioengineering applications. In the first part, we explore the activefluidic behavior driven by electric field, so-called electrokinetic flow inisotropic, namely water, and anisotropic medium, i.e. liquid crystal. Thesecond part will move to the newly discovered active living matter formed bycombining self-propelled bacteria and water based liquid crystalline material.By photo-patterning the liquid crystalline environment, the polarity of activefluids and distribution of the bacteria can be controlled. The last part willcover the latest progress in bioengineering applications of the active fluidsin biomolecular sensing and sorting.

Dr.Chenhui Peng is an Assistant Professor in Department of Physics and MaterialsScience in the University of Memphis from Aug. 2018. He got his PhD degree fromLiquid Crystal Institute of Kent State University in Ohio in 2016. Afterwardshe did Postdoc work in MIT from 2016 to 2018. His research interest includes activesoft matter, biophysics, electrokinetics, polymer, collssoidal self-assembly,microfluidics and their bioengineering applications and his work have beenpublished in Science, Science Advances, Nature Communications and AdvancedMaterials etc. He got Alfred Saupe award in 2015 and he is also the recipientof the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad, top tierextraordinary special award, 10 out of 500 in 2018.
